The global village is becoming a reality

People have been talking about the global village for decades now. It is the idea that our world is becoming so interconnected that it is like one giant village.

This village is now possible because of the expansion of the internet. Using Skype or MSN messenger you can communicate with people from across the world.

This means that we can exchange information and ideas much more quickly. So now a new kind of democracy is possible, one across borders and nations and one which is direct and immediate.

The Gift Economy

So the idea of cyber-communism goes a bit further.

You may be inclined to wonder why it is that there is no class struggle in the electronic world? Well, the idea of the gift economy may help you out here.

It was Barbrook that said ”Under capitalism, most goods and services are produced as commodities” and then went on to note that in the electronic world it’s not exactly like this. See in the cyber realm, commodities are given as gifts. Think about it. When was the last time you paid for a goods or services on the internet (keep it clean!)?! I can’t remember the last time I did.

Think back to before you came on this website. What website did you go to? Wikipedia- the self titled “free encyclopedia”? Maybe you were having a cheeky little look on Pirate Bay for something free. Maybe you chatted to friends on facebook. Whatever you did, I bet it was free.

Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you where to get something free from on the internet. Well, perhaps best not to ask a teenage boy where to get something free from. What was that I was saying about keeping it clean…

Whilst information circles quite freely on the net, the cyber-communism is kept alive

This Cybercommunism thingy..

So, cyber-communism then..

What exactly is it?

Basically the theory of cyber-communism goes something like that with the development of technology, the post-capitalist society has now emerged. But it’s not in the real world. It’s right here, in the cyber world.

As long as you have a computer, with internet access, you have been liberated. You can write your thoughts and express your views free from oppression by the class system.  Pretty much in the way I’m doing now.

Simple right? Well, best keep it simple, a confused customer isn’t one that’ll come back again!

Snow is falling…

Hope you all like the snow falling all around us..

Shakin’ Stevens would be pretty proud I think
